Onboards was born when my Latin American passion for skating, surfing and snowboarding met the London city life.
I have been on boards since I can remember.
Barely walking, I was inseparable from my three-wheel scooter I got for my second birthday. Countless skateboards followed, usually put together from spare parts. (Hey, I’m from Rio, the place where empty pockets and creativity met and fell in love!).
And then came surfing at Copacabana and the surrounding beautiful beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Perfect waves and amazing sceneries, all inspirations for what later would become OnBoards. A few years later, I moved to Patagonia where another love was waiting for me – in the towering Andes, I discovered snowboarding. Argentina may not be the first place you think of in this context, but Bariloche is one heck of a ski and snowboarding resort — and should be on your bucket list.
So standing on a moving platform, wind in my hair, adrenaline pumping — that’s all second nature to me. I wondered – when I move to the big city for work, how can I extend this feeling of freedom and connectedness to nature on my way to work, shop, school, you name it.
And then I discovered electric scooters. The wondering was over.
Not only do I believe it is the most fun way to get around, it’s also the best way to interact with our environment. Also, I’m older now and don’t want to arrive sweaty at work :-).
Short of walking or cycling, e-scooters are the greenest way to move around. Less pollution, less traffic, less noise. And when commuters swap their car for an e-scooter, it means fewer cars on the roads, fewer serious accidents, fewer cars parked. Fewer 1,200 pound pieces of metal on the read means more space for trees, plants, benches, playing areas… It’s by far the best way to get around the city.
Because electric mobility is an unstoppable revolution that I want to promote and be part of, I’ve been using different models of scooters and e-bikes for the past five years while working a 9-5 job.
And as I’ve seen how good e-scooters were becoming — better range, shorter battery charging time, reliability during rain, sturdiness — I quit my day job and went on a discovery journey across the world.
I must have tested and taken apart over 200 different models of e-scooters from 25+ different manufacturers in 2018.
Now I can tell you exactly what technology is in each scooter, and which scooter is best for which use case. And importantly — which models to stay away from. Because there’s a lot of rubbish out there.
And from this abundance of choices, I have selected the very few models that you now can find on this website. There’s power in curation, and I’ve picked only the very best.
After partnering with my friend Dave who is equally passionate about electric mobility (he drives a Tesla Model S), we launched Onboards in 2018, because we believe that the electric scooter revolution is kicking in, and that people deserve the best information and selection of high quality products, curated by an expert.
My main goal is that you are comfortable with your choice.
Therefore, you will always get expert advice on which product is best for your use case. I will also provide you with extensive tutorials how to ride, how to conserve energy, safety advice, and how to maintain your scooter or e-Bike in optimal technical condition.
So this is it — a short story of Onboards. Born of passion, refined through expertise, committed to 100% customer satisfaction.
I’ll see you on board!
